Drive ~3 hrs to Messina, take the Messina ↔ Villa San Giovanni drive-on ferry (~20 min crossing) to the mainland, then head south briefly to Fuscaldo — a meaningful heritage stop for the family — before continuing north to Cetraro. Grand Hotel San Michele check-in opens at 3:00pm. Long day; start early.
Long driving day — roughly 5–6 hrs from Cetraro to Borgo San Felice via the A3/A1. Checkout by 11am, aim to arrive after 3:00pm. Worth a lunch break en route. This is one of the trip highlights, so arrive, slow down, and enjoy the property.
Make this the slowest luxury day: breakfast, pool/spa, short Siena visit or countryside drive, then a memorable dinner.
Drop off the rental car at the Enterprise location near Como / MXP (Via Varesina 138, Malpensa area). Confirm the exact return branch with Expedia before travel — the drop-off site is near the airport, not central Como. After the return, transfer onward to Bellagio for three nights at Belvedere Bellagio.
Classic Como day: Bellagio lanes in the morning, ferry to Varenna or Menaggio, and come back for sunset.
Hold this day lightly. The best Lake Como day may be less itinerary and more views, wine, and wandering.
Early departure: plan a very early private transfer from Bellagio to MXP. This is the highest-risk logistics morning of the trip.
Prebook a private transfer, ask the hotel for a breakfast box, and leave a larger buffer than feels necessary.
